Multi-Tasking

‘Jack of all trades and master of none’- this proverb proves to be obsolete in today’s world. You need to hustle to make your place in this world that has cut-edge competition. You need to be good at multiple things and keep upskilling yourself to fight the tough competition prevailing in society. But alas! You have limited time to do multiple things in a day. You need to manage this time properly and efficiently so that you can improve yourself and your skills. Multitasking helps you achieve this and make the best use of your time. Let’s move on to find what is multitasking and explore some tips to excel at it.

Tips To do Multitasking

Before we move on to the tips to do multitasking, let’s read about what is multitasking?

Multitasking, as the name suggests, is the activity of doing multiple tasks simultaneously. It has been defined for both humans and computers as well. Human multitasking refers to the activity of doing more than one task simultaneously like reading your favourite author’s book while listening to music. In technical terms, Multitasking is the ability of a computer to allow the users to run multiple programs on the computer at the same time.

Multitasking divides the attention of our brain on multiple things at the same time. The brain needs time to regain attention on a particular task and restart working with the same accuracy and attention.

This often leads to more time being consumed than if the tasks were done in a sequential manner. Does this mean that you cannot master this art and do multiple tasks at the same time? Definitely not. Here we are telling you the tips/ways to do multitask and upskill yourself by making the best use of your time.

Tip 1- Set realistic goals for yourself

The most important point to keep in mind while you are multitasking is to set realistic goals for yourself. Do not set goals in a dopamine rush that you later find impossible to achieve. Making achievable goals and completing them gives you confidence and a sense of satisfaction that motivates you to work further with more energy.

If you are not able to achieve your unrealistic goals, you feel defeated and demotivated. It is, therefore, better to make goals that are achievable and realistic.

Tip 2- Time your tasks properly

After you have set your goals, you need to assign them a time frame in which they need to be completed. Make sure that you give yourself enough time to work on a particular task before moving on to the other one. Trying to complete a task too early will degrade the quality of your work and restrict the creativity of your brain.

Allot a proper time frame for each task and then make sure to complete your task in the allotted time frame. This will maintain the quality of your work and will not lead to unnecessary stress.

First things first!

This definitely means that you need to prioritize your goals. This makes you realize which tasks need to be done first and the tasks that you can postpone to a later hour. Prioritizing your goals will also ensure that you are completing more important tasks on time and not delaying them because of the less important ones. This is a good technique to filter the tasks at your hand so that you can complete them more effectively.

Tip 3- Bring technology to your aid

Living in the world of technology, how can you forget online resources and applications that help you keep organized and manage your tasks? There are a lot of applications available that let you list down all the tasks that you have at hand so that you do not miss out on the crucial ones.
Technology

This is a good method of writing down all the tasks in the form of a to-do list which is more organized and works effectively in making you a pro at multitasking.

Tip 4- Planing is more important than execution

Yes, you read it right. Listing down all the tasks is not enough. You need to plan your tasks and break down your monthly goals into weekly ones and then further break them into daily goals that you need to achieve.

Planing is a crucial part of your multitasking routine which helps you to achieve even the greatest of your goals with ease and without any kind of stress. Planing out your long-term goals gives you daily goals that need to be achieved and executed to fulfil a bigger purpose.

Tip 5- Try out the Pomodoro Technique

It is quite normal to get carried away when you are working on your projects. To save yourself from distraction, you can adopt the Pomodoro Technique which lets you use your time with full efficiency and saves you from unnecessary distractions. Simply divide your work into intervals of 25 minutes each and then take a break of 5 minutes after you are done with the first 25 minutes.

After every 4-5 pomodoros, you can take a 30 minutes break to give your brain a longer respite. This will keep your brain focused and you will be able to complete your tasks with full efficiency.

Conclusion

These were some tips that can help you in multitasking. You can try these out but be aware that -’ Rome was not built in a day '. You need to practice these skills extensively and consistently in your daily life so that you can train your brain to do multiple things simultaneously. Being a pro at multitasking is not difficult but you definitely need to put some effort to actually practise it effectively.
